With the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) set to take place on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Hong Kong AWE, their second line-up has been revealed, adding to the excitement of many music fans. With this new line-up, fans will see all the in vogue idols that have taken the world of K-Pop by storm this year, including SEVENTEEN, GFRIEND, TWICE, I.O.I. and NCT DREAM.
First of all, SEVENTEEN is a talented idol group that has raked in Newcomer prizes at numerous music awards since their 2015 debut on the strength of hit songs such as “Adore U” and “Mansae.” The self-produced idol group, known for producing their own music and creating their choreography on their own, consists of three units, Vocal Team, Hip Hop Team, and Performance Team — an interesting concept that immediately catches attention. With the great popularity and success of their debut full-length album, “Love & Letter,” released in April this year, they have cemented their position as an in vogue idol group.
Over two years since their debut, GFRIEND has snatched up a total of 29 no.1 spots on a variety of Korean music shows with their hit songs such as “Rough” and “Navillera,” setting a record of winning the highest number of no.1 spots as a girl group. The group employed the concept of “power innocence” and has succeeded in generating four consecutive hit songs, from their debut song, “Glass Bead,” to “Navillera.” GFRIEND is continuing their streak of setting new records, exclusively earning the qualifiers “unprecedented” and “most” from the media.
TWICE made a glorious comeback on the 24th of last month with their new song “TT” topping all eight major Korean digital music charts. In addition to that chart-topping feat, the music video for their debut song has also recently pulled in more than one hundred million views, an unprecedented number for a Korean pop group or singer, cementing the group as an in vogue girl group. TWICE is creating a sensation with their three consecutive hits, which started with their debut song “Like OOH-AHH” followed by “Cheer-Up” and their newest single, “TT”.
On another front, I.O.I. and NCT DREAM will grace the 2016 MAMA’s red-carpeted stage. I.O.I, a project girl group born of the Mnet program ‘Produce 101’, has heated up the K-Pop world this year with their chart-topping feat as well as their well-received appearances on various Korean entertainment shows and TV drama series. The group has made huge waves this year, setting a series of unprecedented records with their hit songs, including their debut song “Dream Girls” and unit group song “Whatta Man” as well as “Very,” the lead single of their second mini album.
An offshoot of the K-Pop group NCT that comprises the group’s teenage members, NCT DREAM is a rookie boy group that instantly caught the imagination of both girls and boys with their fresh boyish charms, boasting an average collective age of 15.6. Despite having debuted only a month ago, NCT Dream is now getting a lot of attention with their freewheeling onstage performances which see the group members riding Hoverboards as well as their upbeat debut dance number “Chewing Gum,” thanks to which they vied for no. 1 on many Korean music shows.
Music fans’ expectations for 2016 MAMA are growing more and more with the confirmation of appearances of the aforementioned in vogue idol groups, following on the heels of EXO and BTS. In the midst of this heated atmosphere, sales of red carpet tickets, which will allow you to see stars from Korea and other countries in the flesh, opened on last Wednesday, the 16th, at hkticketing.com where you can also buy tickets for the main awards ceremony. In other news, the 2016 MAMA online poll is garnering a lot of attention, having accumulated over 50 million votes so far. The online poll will be open until midnight, Thursday, December 1st, 2016. You can cast your vote, one vote per day, on the 2016 MAMA’s official website 2016mama.com through your PC as well as on your mobile.
Entering its eighth year, MAMA is Asia’s most prestigious music awards where people become one through music, hosted by the world’s leading content company CJ E&M. The awards have constantly evolved for the last ten years with the growth of Korea’s music industry, from 1999’s Mnet Video Music Awards, through 2006’s Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF), and into its current international form, MAMA in 2009. From 2010, MAMA went global, first in Macau, Singapore in 2011, and Hong Kong from 2012 to 2015. Having extended beyond being a mere year-end music awards event, MAMA is now one of the world’s largest music festivals enjoyed by people all over the world and serves as a global communication outlet as well as a platform to promote Asian pop music.
The coming 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), set to be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) in Hong Kong on Friday, December 2, 2016, aims to transform itself into a field of communication that bridges artists, global music fans, and creators based on the concept of “connection.” A new space that connects technology with emotion and virtuality with reality will be created on the main stage which will host award ceremonies and performances. The award ceremonies and performances happening on the stage will be truly ingenious ones that can only be pulled off by MAMA and will make for a grand finale to the year 2016.
