CJ Logistics has become the first logistics company to deploy advanced robot arms to pick up boxes of different shapes and sizes, eliminating the need for staff to manually move them. As state-of-the-art technology increases the efficiency of the workflow, so too is the experience of both sellers and consumers expected to be enhanced.

Since they can pick up boxes automatically, even when they are piled up in an unorganized manner, they are also called "multiple-pattern picking robot arms." An employee of CJ Logistics explains how the "AI robot depalletizers" work at the fulfillment center in Dongtan.
CJ Logistics announced on the 22nd that it had adopted the first "AI robot depalletizers" that are capable of picking up boxes of different dimensions and placing them on the conveyor belt by recognizing their sizes, heights, and locations. Since they can pick up boxes of different dimensions, even when they are piled up in an unorganized manner, and as their motion is similar to that of humans, they are also referred to as "multiple-pattern picking robot arms." Currently, they are being used to pick and move parcels ordered through e-commerce at the company's fulfillment center in Dongtan, a logistics hub for storage, inventory management, packaging, and delivery.
The existing depalletizers were only able to pick up boxes that were of a specific dimension according to their original designs. If parcels were located out of the originally designated location or different in size, the depalletizers were unable to do their job. They were only used in distribution centers that handled a single product since they were unable to respond flexibly to the growing variety of consumer-ordered goods, meaning human workers at other centers had to pick up and move heavy parcels by themselves.
Applied 3D image sensing and AI deep learning technologies, recognize and learn sizes, heights, and corners in real-time
CJ Logistics has succeeded in developing a system that can move boxes of different dimensions without any interruption by applying 3D image sensing and AI deep learning technologies. With the vision camera installed on the upper side, the system recognizes and learns the size, height, and location of a box’s corners in real-time. The system is helping the company to enhance its productivity by being able to pick up to 2 parcels with different heights and sizes at the same time.
The robot arms can lift up a parcel as heavy as 20kg using special pads that are attached to the tip of the grippers and vacuum suction force. After they lift the boxes using the suction force, supporting structures hold up the two sides of the boxes, preventing parcels from falling or shaking. In this way, they are capable of processing 700 boxes an hour on average.
CJ Logistics plans to focus on further developing cutting-edge technologies that have various applications in order to improve the working environment and increase productivity.
