CJ ENM O Shopping Division was the only one in the home shopping business to be selected as ‘Excellent Organization’ in the category of Eco-friendly Consumption in the government’s ‘2020 Promotion of Eco-friendly Technology and Consumption’ and received the Minister of Environment prize. At the same time, it was also awarded in the ‘Green Packaging’ Contest, winning recognition for its competitiveness as a ‘good company’ in the Green Survival era (an era in which eco-friendliness is essential).
The ‘Promotion of Eco-friendly Technology and Consumption’ award hosted by the Ministry of Environment intends to develop technologies and industries in eco-friendly consumption, production, and environment for sustainable growth. A number of candidates among businesses, individuals, and public institutions that have contributed to the publicity, education, consumption, and distribution of eco-friendly products had been recommended to the Ministry of Environment in advance. After the evaluation, CJ ENM was the only home shopping company to be included in the list of winners. Acknowledged for its contribution to spreading eco-friendly activities in the distribution industry, CJ ENM O Shopping Division also received the consolation prize at the ‘2020 Resource Circulation Green Packaging Contest’.
CJ ENM O Shopping Division was the first in the industry to adopt paper cushioning instead of plastic bubble wrap in July 2017, as well as an eco-friendly cold storage package and paper hanger box. The company leads eco-friendly activities by being the first in the distribution industry to apply an ‘Eco Tapeless Box’ that does not require adhesive or vinyl tape to package materials, which are not easily recycled. In fact, the amount of vinyl and plastic packaging materials CJ ENM O Shopping Division are actually reduced by replacing them with eco-friendly packaging materials, which is about 41 times (214,199㎡) the total area of Seoul World Cup Stadium in Sangam, Mapo-gu, Seoul. The weight itself is as much as 24.4t.
Approximately 3.26 million boxes were made using eco-friendly paper packaging materials. As a result of replacing plastic materials like OPP (Oriented Poly Propylene) tape with paper tape, approximately 2,300 km (by length of box tape) of plastic was reduced. In addition, unrecyclable nonwoven fabric clothing hangers were replaced with paper hanger boxes, thereby reducing of the amount of nonwoven fabric usage by 3.5t.
In addition to reducing packaging materials, CJ ENM O Shopping Division is also devoted to introducing proper methods of disposal. ‘Eco Packaging Together’, a campaign by CJ ENM O Shopping Division, provides information for consumers to properly dispose of the delivery boxes to facilitate recycling. Moreover, the company created guidelines for customized packaging according to the Ministry of Environment’s standard for applying the ratio of packaging space so that its subcontractors can also participate in reducing packaging materials. CJ ENM is the first in the distribution industry to do this, thereby encouraging the participation of over 9,000 subcontractors.
“As a company leading the consumption of eco-friendly packaging materials, we’ve been striving to create an eco-friendly culture by encouraging the participation of distributors and consumers,” said Jae-hong Lim in charge of customer services at CJ ENM O Shopping Division. “We’re going to continue doing our best to fulfill our corporate social responsibility and provide differentiated customer experience by creating an ecosystem for green packaging.”
