CGV Gangbyeon is coming back in revamped form in celebration of its 20th anniversary!

CGV Gangbyeon, South Korea’s first multiplex which initially opened its doors in Gangbyeon Techno Mart, is going to receive a facelift in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

- Reborn as a healing space for its 20th anniversary

CGV Gangbyeon reopens on July 6 with a new design concept. Featuring new special spaces, the revamped CGV Gangbyeon boasts 11 screens and 1,461 seats. The design concept for the new CGV Gangbyeon is “healing,” so viewers can expect to find moments of good rest while at the theater. CGV Gangbyeon has been used by South Korean movie viewers for the past 20 years, and for this relaunch, CJ has remodeled the multiplex theater to become a resting place in the city center where people can freely rest and relax. With this new design, visitors can now not only have the pleasure of watching movies amid the hustle-bustle of daily life but also relish relaxation and leisure.

To start off, the first thing that catches your eye when entering the lobby of the theater is Book & Lounge, which fills a whole wall. Book & Lounge is a special amenity designed to encourage people to visit CGV Gangbyeon for relaxation even if they are not in the mood for a movie. At the entrance of Book & Lounge, you can see an approximately 4m-tall sculpture in the shape of 18 gigantic sculptures stacked up, which effectively conveys that this is a space for reading books.

Book & Lounge is divided into six sections, travel/hobby, life/essay/healing, architecture/interior, photography/graphic design, magazines, and children, each section featuring as many as 1,000 books for anyone to read them freely. Aside from books, Book & Lounge also features a digital art gallery space where you can enjoy the works of emerging artists from all around the world for free. The gallery space is scheduled to be filled with various works under a new theme every month.

In addition, green has been added to CGV's signature retro vintage design as an accent color so that visitors can feel a visual sense of serenity as well. Green plants have been added in many corners of the area spanning from the entrance to the screening rooms to add life to the overall space. These plants not only help create a nature-friendly atmosphere but also have the effect of purifying the air inside the theater. Even the number of each screening room is expressed using green plants to make you feel even more relaxed.

New screening rooms designed for more comfortable movie-watching experiences will also be unveiled. The new CGV Gangbyeon features Cine & Foret, South Korea’s first screening room to employ a nature-inspired design for better relaxation. Cine & Foret is South Korea’s first hill-shaped multi-purpose screening room designed to offer the feeling of a forest in the city center. The room’s inner walls have been filled with reindeer moss, and its floor has been covered in indoor grass.

Also, comfortable designs have been chosen for the seats so that viewers can watch their movies as if on a picnic, such as mats, beanbags, and cabanas. In addition, the new CGV Gangbyeon offers “Comfort Pavilion” as well. In Comfort Pavilion, you can watch movies more comfortably thanks to its cushy seats which are about 22cm wider than the previous seats.

There are also surprise events taking place to celebrate the relaunch of CGV Gangbyeon. The “Go Back to 1998” event will be happening from July 6 to 8. The event provides the opportunity to enjoy 2D movies screened at CGV Gangbyeon for 6,000 won — the average movie ticket price 20 years ago — for three days. From July 9 to 13, 1,000 mason jar salads will be given for free to paid visitors to CGV Gangbyeon on a first-come-first-served basis.

At 8 pm on July 12, there will be a “Chicken & Beer Night” event, which will be joined by writer Hye-yoon Jung, who wrote the book “An Expected Good Event”. This is an event where you can participate in a book talk while enjoying beer at Cine & Foret and Book & Lounge, and all participants will be given a copy of “An Expected Good Event” and a glass of beer. If you are interested, you can apply for the event by leaving a comment on the event page of CGV’s website or its mobile app event page by July 8. The winners will be announced on the 9th.

"We're very pleased to be able to present a new form of CGV Gangbyeon, which launched the CGV brand and heralded the multiplex era in South Korea,” said Sang-hyun Kim, CGV Gangbyeon's culture coordinator. “We will do our best to make the new CGV Gangbyeon a place where our loyal, supportive customers can find leisure and fun amid the hectic pace of city life.”
