CJ will enter the Japanese kimchi market in the first half of next year.
CJ disclosed on the 6th that the company will enter the Japanese market from the first half of next year with a kimchi brand that consumers can rely on.
CJ will introduce premium kimchi products in Japan, but the brand name has not been decided yet.
A CJ personnel said, “Entering the Japanese kimchi market is a part of the group’s plans for global expansion.”  The person added, “We are reviewing a number of brand names that could attract Japanese consumers.”
CJ decided to enter the Japanese kimchi market because the company determined that premium products will be successful in Japan.  Also, the domestic kimchi market is dominated by the early entrants such as Doosan, Pulmuone, and Dongwon F&B.
Currently, the size of the packaged kimchi market in Japan is about 345 billion won, which is about 2.6 times that of Korea, and Korean companies’ market share is around 7%.
