The Night Race is attracting lots of attention after not having been held for two years. It allows audiences to attend and view the race in the stadium. However, what is garnering even more interest is the great anticipation and immense curiosity of what kind of race it will play out to be, and who will be its champion. The Night Race, a special race made by the Superrace Championship, will be held on July 10, 2021 at Inje Speedium, Inje, Gangwon-do province.
◇ Champions of Inje as proven in tests
Records from the second official test conducted at 3.908 km Inje Speedium help fans guess who will compete in the race. Uichul Cheong (Ecsta Racing), who broke the record for the shortest lap time, boasted his driving prowess, ranking second place in the second round of the test. He does not fall short of being the top candidate for the winner of this race as he has won twice in Inje Night Races. However, Joowon Seo (Loar Racing) has a strong presence as the fastest driver in the second test. He made viewers look forward to seeing his victory in this race, setting a series of records close to the Inje Speedium course records. Seo placed third in Night Race 2019. At the time, Seo started the final on the 10th grid and climbed up several notches one after another, deeply engraving the dramatic overtaking scene in the hearts of fans.
◇Dong-eun Kim, the winner of Night Race 2019, returns
Dong-eun Kim (L&K Motors), who enlisted in the military at the end of the 2019 season, is returning to the Super 6000 class, Superrace Championship. The Night Race is also gaining immense attention as Kim has chosen the event as a comeback stage after serving in the military. Two years ago, Kim had risen to stardom in the Night Race for having won in both the preliminary and the final round with a perfect race in which he never missed the first spot. The one minute and 36.360 seconds recorded in the preliminary round was the fastest lap time in the history of the Inje Speedium Night Race. In this race, Kim has to overcome multiple obstacles such as a 80 kg handicap weight provided to drivers participating in the middle of the season and driving capabilities that dwindled during his military service. Nevertheless, as Kim is an experienced driver who has demonstrated his outstanding driving skills, it is very likely that he will be an important variable in the competition.
◇ Rise from a humble newcomer to a Night Race superstar
A rookie of this season, Eun-jung Lee (L&K Motors), will be joining the race for the first time. There are also other drivers who are playing their first night race in the second round as the night race could not be held last year due to COVID-19. Sung-hak Moon and Kwang-bin Choi (CJ Logistics Racing), Chan-joon Lee (Loar Racing), and Seok-hyeon Seo (MIDAS Racing-ATLASBX) are joining the Super 6000 Class for the second time, but have no experience in the night race yet. As for Choi, he had placedsecond in the Night Race 2019 but he is new to the Super 6000 Class racing machine. It will be interesting to see how drivers with no night race experience come into play in the race as they account for about 1/4 of the total entries. There is also a possibility that rookies exert their talent hidden in the weekly race to become overnight stars.
