"AI technology based on data that connects home appliances with users"

Seoul, South Korea, January 14, 2021 — Today, CJ OliveNetworks unveiled Recipick, a personalized dish and recipe recommendation AI technology jointly developed with LG Electronics that connects a refrigerator with users.

Recipick is a technology that matches the food in the fridge and the user data accumulated by the fridge to recommend recipes that best suit the user’s lifestyle along with other complementary dishes.

Customer-centric technology innovation that enhances interactions between home appliances and consumers through data integration

CJ OliveNetworks and LGE have combined the food and recipe data from the largest food company in Korea, CJ CheilJedang, with LGE’s smart refrigerator. Together, they verified the technology that enables customers to interact with their home appliances and get personalized content that corresponds with their lifestyle.

Since last September, DT Convergence Research Institute at CJ OliveNetworks and LG AI Research have collaborated on R&D using product-service data convergence and smart devices. They adopted Food2Vec technology, which turns data into vectors, and taught the AI to learn all kinds of recipes and food ingredients from CJ CheilJedang, as well as food reviews from social media.

Customers who use smart refrigerators with this technology can check the ingredients in the refrigerator from their smartphones through LGE’s image or video recognition technology called Vision Pack. The refrigerator recommends not only recipes that matches the user’s lifestyle, but also other complementary menus.

The jointly developed technology was revealed in a video introducing Vision Pack during the LG Future Talk event held at CES 2021.

The video showed a woman checking the ingredients inside her refrigerator from a smartphone. She finds Bibigo Gotchu Sauce and vegetables inside and gets recipe recommendations using Bibigo Mandu in this case, based on her preference.

CJ OliveNetworks plans to add various customer behavior data and develop Recipick into a food and recipe recommendation service that best reflects the user’s lifestyle. “We can improve customer interaction by adding food data into home appliances,” said Cha In-Hyeok, CEO of CJ OliveNetworks. “Based on the IT technology, we will integrate data from our two companies to further develop the existing technology to enhance customers’ quality of life and contribute to the innovation of customer-centric technologies.”
