CJ CheilJedang announced on the 22ndthe publication of the 2019 Sustainability Report: Nature to Nature, which illustrates the previous year’s sustainability outcomes and this year’s strategies and goals.“Nature to Natureˮ represents the key aim of the report to realize the virtuous cycle of “nature to table and back to nature againˮ based on CJ Group’s founding principle of “Serving the country through business activities.ˮ
CEO Kang Shin-ho of CJ CheilJedang stated through his message, “Sustainable development and the social and environmental responsibilities of corporations are becoming more and more important amidst unprecedented difficulties such as the increasing uncertainties in the global economy, declining exports, and reduced consumer confidence. Our top priority to achieve sustainable management this year is the realization of the two values of customer health/product safety and sustainable environment.”
Produced in an environmentally responsible way by using eco-friendly packaging and thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 978 tons

The report introduces the outcomes of both domestic and overseas CJ workplaces, including our pursuit of customer health and safety (purchasing 600,000 tons of eco-friendly raw materials, etc.), eco-friendly changes (reducing CO2 emissions by 978 tons by using eco-friendly packaging, etc.), and the reinforcement of our global presence (building 11 overseas bio production bases, etc.).
In particular, it sheds light on our endeavors to achieve environmentally responsbile management, which has emerged as the center of attention these days. In 2019, we reduced the use of plastic raw materials for the packaging of Hetbahn and seasoning products and functional films by about 551 tons. The reduced amount is equivalent to the plastic used to produce 3,673 vehicles (about 150kg of plastic per vehicle). We also cut 722 tons of waste per year through the resource recycling program.
In addition to our performance related to major issues, the report compiles our outcomes for economic and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) factors, which are gaining greater importance in corporate assessment, to help stakeholders assess and understand our efforts from multiple perspectives.
Applying Navigator and Interactive PDF optimized for online communication
Advanced methods were adopted to ensure the online readability and information delivery of this report. Infographic-centered design and horizontal composition were introduced, as well as Navigator to enable viewers to identify the table of contents at a glance and readily access the desired theme and information with a single click. Interactive PDF was also applied to provide direct links to websites of related information.
CJ CheilJedang’s Sustainability Report can be viewed on our website (www.cj.co.kr), and its English version will be released on the 30th to reach out to overseas stakeholders as well.
A CJ CheilJedang staff member said, “We have been publishing the Sustainability Report on an annual basis since 2013 to transparently share and communicate our sustainability activities, related outcomes, and future plans. We will continue to exert our best efforts under a clearly defined vision and goal to advance the co-growth of our company and stakeholders.”
