The 2016 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) will be held at Hong Kong AWE on December 2 (Friday) as the best music award ceremony which unites people around the world as one.
The Mnet Asian Music Awards, the best music awards ceremony in Asia, unveiled its third artist lineup a week ahead of the ceremony. The lineup included all groups and solo artists who enriched the Korean music industry with music of various genres such as GOT7, Monsta X, BewhY, Taemin, Taeyeon among others in 2016.
Among them is GOT7 whose second regular album “Flight Log: Turbulence,” has achieved remarkable results, selling over 200,000 copies. In particular, its title song “Hard Carry” ranked on the US iTunes Song Chart, proving their global popularity. In addition, this year, they underwent their first global tour. They held 21 concerts in a total of 13 cities over the course of four months, making their presence felt as iconic K-Pop idols.
The hip hop boy group Monsta X has been active for the past 18 months since its debut, releasing four mini albums and one repackaged mini album. Of particular note, the fourth mini album “The Clan Part.2 Guilty” ranked first on the K-Pop album charts of US and Japanese iTunes on the day of its release. The music video of its title song "Fighter" drew much attention from global music fans, surpassing one million views.
Rapper BewhY, the winner of Mnet’s “Show Me the Money 5” also graced the 2016 MAMA. BewhY has been the hottest rapper this year. He is widely acclaimed both at home and abroad for singing excellent rap songs based on his distinctive pronunciation and cool voice such as releasing a collaboration song with US hip hop musician Talib Kweli, like his nickname attests, “Monsta Rapper.” BewhY tends to top music charts whenever he releases a new song, thus underscoring as to why he is truly the most popular rapper of Korea.
SHINee’s Taemin released his second solo album “Press It” this year. Its title song “Press Your Number," a collaborative song written by world-famous pop singer Bruno Mars, composed by a production team of “The Stereotypes” and Taemin, won trophies in music broadcasts, empowering Taemin to cement his stature as a male solo performer. On top of that, the song enjoyed immense popularity, claiming second place in the US Billboard World Album Chart, coming in first in the general album charts of iTunes Asia, and seven general album charts in Europe.
Lastly, Taeyeon, a vocalist of Girls’ Generation who has been highly praised as “the most emotional vocalist,” showed off her true ability, conquering seven major music charts in Korea with her non-album single “11:11” following her first solo mini album “I” and second mini album “Why.” She exhibited her strong position as a female solo singer with a mixture of her powerful but soft tone and the genre of pop ballads.
In addition, the 2016 MAMA lineup that has been released up to now includes EXO, BTS, SEVENTEEN, GFRIEND, TWICE, I.O.I, NCT DREAM, Suzy and Baekhyun, who will sing “Dream” for live audiences for the first time via the event, plus Timbaland, Eric Nam, rapper Wiz Khalifa and more. Furthermore, the event will invite popular actors and actresses such as Lee Byung-Hun, Cha Seung-Won, Ha Ji-Won, Han Hyo-Joo, Jang Hyuk, Han Ji-Min, Park Ki-Woong and Park Min-Young who made their overwhelming presence felt in the Korean pop culture as VIPs who will hand out prizes. A lot of focus is being paid to what artists and actors will join the 2016 MAMA and make the event even more exciting.

The MAMA is a truly iconic music festival in Asia hosted by leading content company CJ E&M and celebrates its 8th anniversary this year. The event started as the Mnet Music Video Awards in 1999 and has been steadily evolving along with the growth of the Korean music industry and has been held in Korea for approximately 10 years until its current international form, MAMA in 2009.
Since 2010, the MAMA went global, beginning with Macau, landing in Singapore in 2011 and Hong Kong from 2012 to 2015. During this process, the MAMA has established itself as the largest music festival in the world, a global communication channel and a venue to help the spread of Asian pop music, going beyond being a mere year-end music award ceremony.

The MAMA showcased its status as a premier music festival in Asia and a platform for global advancement as a record 188 companies applied for the convention in beauty, idea household product and fashion sectors. This figure more than doubled from 91 in 2014. A total of 51 small and mid-sized companies were finally selected through evaluation by the judging committee composed of the Large and Small Business Cooperation Foundation and external experts and the marketability evaluation by KOTRA. To top it off, eight companies selected by KOCCA and five selected by KOTRA will join the 51 companies, indicating that a total of 64 excellent small and mid-sized firms will hold joint exhibitions and an import and export fair for buyers from Greater China on December 2.
